Highland Lakes Road, signed A5, climbs from the southern Midlands through Bothwell to yingina / Great Lake, then descends the Great Western Tiers towards Deloraine. It is an exposed high-country route, not a guaranteed scenic shortcut.
Bothwell to Miena
Services thin quickly north of Bothwell. Carry fuel, food, water and warm clothing. Frost, snow, wind and low cloud can affect the road in any cool-weather system.
Across the plateau
The road follows open moorland and hydro storages near Miena and Liawenee. Use formed lookouts and lake access points. Do not enter operational canal, dam or fisheries areas.
Descent to the north
The route passes steep and winding sections near the Great Western Tiers. Watch for ice, wildlife, livestock and vehicles crossing the centre line. Avoid night driving where possible.
Stop at Bothwell, plan supplies for Miena, and use Deloraine as the northern service centre.
