The Central Plateau Conservation Area protects a remote landscape of alpine lakes, moorland and glacial landforms. The A5 follows its eastern edge, while interior roads require much greater preparation.

Stay on the appropriate road

Highland Lakes Road reaches Great Lake and Liawenee. Roads beyond Lake Augusta can require a high-clearance four-wheel drive, and seasonal gates close access in colder months.

Severe weather is normal

Snow, wind, frost and rapid temperature changes occur in every season. Carry shelter, fuel and navigation, and do not rely on phone coverage.

Protect a fragile landscape

The conservation area is fuel-stove only. Fishing, horse riding and hunting have specific licences or permits. Keep vehicles on authorised tracks and clean equipment to limit weeds and aquatic pests.

Connect via Bronte Park and the broader Central Highlands.
