Choose transport around the places you want to reach
Most visitors arrive through Hobart or Launceston airports. Devonport is the arrival point for the Spirit of Tasmania vehicle ferry from Geelong, while smaller airports serve the north-west and Bass Strait islands.
A car gives the broadest access outside the cities, but it is not the only option. Public buses link urban and many regional centres, intercity services connect Hobart, Launceston and parts of the north-west, and organised tours cover routes that are difficult without a vehicle. Timetables can be limited, so plan regional public-transport journeys before booking accommodation.
Allow for the island’s roads
Driving time matters more than a straight-line distance. Many roads are narrow or winding and conditions can change with weather. The Road Safety Advisory Council advises visiting drivers to stay left, take regular breaks and watch for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk.
