Remarkable Cave is a wave-cut passage through sandstone cliffs south of Port Arthur. The visit combines a broad accessible lookout over Maingon Bay with a steep descent to a purpose-built platform at the cave entrance.
Start at Maingon Bay lookout
The upper path from the car park leads to a large viewing platform with coastal views towards Penguin Rocks. This is the accessible part of the visit and is worthwhile even when the lower stairs are unsuitable.
The cave platform has 115 steps
Parks Tasmania describes the lower walk as a Grade 3 route with 115 steps. The return is short, around 15 minutes, but the stairway can be wet and the sea spray strong. The platform is the safe viewing point. Do not leave it to enter the cave, beach or surge zone.
The tunnel formed as waves eroded the sandstone and part of the cave wall collapsed. Conditions change with tide, swell and weather, so the view through the opening will never be exactly the same.
Longer walks begin nearby
Tracks from the same area lead towards Maingon Blowhole, Mount Brown and Crescent Bay. They are separate walks requiring more time, water and preparation. Do not set off merely because the cave visit felt easy.
A valid parks pass is required. Check Tasman National Park alerts before driving from Port Arthur, and allow time for the wider Tasman Peninsula rather than treating the cave as a roadside photo stop.
