Snow falls most reliably on Tasmania’s high country in winter, but cold outbreaks can bring it to lower hills in any season. A forecast for snow does not guarantee an accessible white landscape, and conditions can deteriorate faster than they do in nearby towns.
Ben Lomond has managed snow access
Ben Lomond is Tasmania’s main downhill snow-sports area. The steep road may require snow chains and can close. Check Parks Tasmania and the operator before leaving Launceston rather than driving up to inspect conditions.
kunanyi and the central mountains
Snow often settles on kunanyi / Mount Wellington, the Central Plateau, Cradle Mountain and higher western ranges. Summit roads can close, parking fills quickly and walking beyond roads requires proper alpine clothing and navigation.
Treat a short outing as cold-weather travel
Carry waterproof layers, warm clothing, food and a charged phone. Do not park on traffic lanes or allow children to play beside moving vehicles. On remote walks, mobile coverage is unreliable and summer snow is possible.
