Tasmania’s mainland connections change with airline seasons, demand and ferry schedules. A useful onward plan starts with the current airport or ferry operator rather than an old list of routes.
Flying onward
Hobart and Launceston offer the broadest range of direct mainland flights. Regional airports may connect directly to Melbourne or require a Tasmanian connection. Hobart also carries scheduled international services when published by the airport and airline.
Separate tickets create separate risks. Leave a substantial buffer or an overnight stop if missing the second service would disrupt the trip. Recheck baggage allowances, especially on regional aircraft.
Crossing Bass Strait by sea
Spirit of Tasmania operates between Devonport and Geelong. Vehicle check-in, dangerous-goods rules, pet arrangements and sailing times differ from an airport journey and must be confirmed before arrival.
Vehicles and one-way journeys
Most rental vehicles cannot simply be carried to the mainland. Read the hire agreement and compare the full cost of returning one vehicle and collecting another.
