Low Head stands at the eastern side of the entrance to kanamaluka / River Tamar. Its pilot station and lighthouse record two centuries of guiding vessels between the river, port and Bass Strait.
Two connected maritime sites
The pilot station began operating in 1805 and retains early buildings around a village green. The light station has operated since 1833, although the present tower and associated buildings reflect later changes in lighthouse technology.

Parks Tasmania currently lists restoration work affecting one cottage and temporary closure of some hospitality and toilet facilities, while the grounds and museum remain open. Conditions can change, so read the alert on the day.

Little penguins and other seabirds use the coast. Join a managed tour or follow official penguin-watching guidance: keep distance, avoid flash and bright white light, and never block a bird’s route.
