Elizabeth Street was the road north
The City of Hobart’s heritage study records Elizabeth Street through this area as laid out by 1828. It became the route from Hobart towards New Town, Glenorchy and eventually Launceston. Inns, workshops, houses and shops developed along the road as the city expanded.
Electric trams encouraged denser growth from the 1890s. By the early twentieth century, the street had become a close commercial and residential strip. Look above modern shopfronts to see earlier rooflines, brickwork and upper-storey details.
A neighbourhood for an unhurried walk
The busiest section runs along Elizabeth Street around Federal Street. The State Cinema, established in 1913, remains a clear landmark, while side streets reveal cottages, former corner shops and layers of infill rather than a single preserved period.
This is an active neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum. Keep doorways and narrow footpaths clear, and remember that most surrounding buildings are homes or operating businesses.
Getting there and moving around
North Hobart is roughly two kilometres uphill from the waterfront. Walking from the centre is straightforward for most visitors, though the return includes slopes. Metro services use Elizabeth Street, and on-street parking is limited and controlled in places.
Check current signs before leaving a vehicle. Evening restaurant and cinema sessions create the greatest parking pressure, so walking or public transport is often simpler.
