The Lyell Highway links Hobart with Queenstown across the Derwent Valley, Central Highlands and Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. It is one of Tasmania’s essential cross-island roads, but it is not a fast transfer once weather and worthwhile stops are included.

Hobart to the high country

The road follows the Derwent through New Norfolk, Hamilton and Ouse before climbing towards Tarraleah and Derwent Bridge. Fuel and food become less dependable beyond the larger towns.

Through the World Heritage Area

West of Derwent Bridge, the highway enters Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Parks Tasmania identifies roadside access to the Franklin Nature Trail, Donaghys Hill and Nelson Falls. Each walk has its own grade and conditions, and a parks pass may be required.

Snow and ice can close or slow the highway. Fog, heavy rain, fallen branches and wildlife are also common. Check state road conditions and park alerts before departure.

The descent to Queenstown

The final approach crosses exposed mountain country before descending steeply towards Queenstown. Use lower gears, leave space around heavy vehicles and pull over only in formed areas.

Allow a full day if walking or sightseeing. Avoid scheduling a fixed West Coast boat departure immediately after the drive, and never stop in a traffic lane for photographs.
