A small island with strong regional differences
Tasmania lies in the temperate zone and experiences four seasons. The west and mountain districts receive much more rain than much of the east, while elevation brings lower temperatures and the possibility of snow or ice. Conditions on a plateau can differ greatly from those in a nearby coastal town.
Summer is December to February, autumn March to May, winter June to August and spring September to November. These labels are useful for broad planning, but they do not replace a current forecast.
Plan for change
Pack layers and rain protection in every season. Check Bureau of Meteorology forecasts before travel and Parks and Wildlife Service alerts before entering parks. In mountain areas, be ready to change plans if wind, fire danger, snow, flooding or track closures make the original route unsuitable.
