Rosebery is a working mining town on the west coast, set beneath Mount Murchison and Mount Read. Its streets, rail infrastructure and employment remain tied to a mineral field developed from the late nineteenth century.
The mine is active, not an abandoned heritage site
Modern underground mining and processing occupy operational land. View industrial structures from public places and obey traffic and access controls. Historical maps are not permission to enter old workings.
Rail connected the field with the coast
The North East Dundas Tramway once linked mines and settlements to Zeehan. The present Melba line continues to carry mineral freight. Bridges, cuttings and formations visible around town belong to different eras and may remain operational.
Montezuma Falls is the principal public nature trip
The walking track follows part of the former tramway through wet forest to one of Tasmania’s highest waterfalls. Parks Tasmania’s current track advice, weather and closure notices should be checked before setting out.
