North West Tasmania is a large touring region. The right base depends on the next day’s route, not only the property itself. Devonport and the Central Coast, Burnie and Wynyard, Stanley and Smithton, Cradle Mountain and the west coast each solve different travel problems.

Choose a base by itinerary
- Devonport: Convenient for ferry and airport arrivals, Latrobe, Sheffield and the eastern Central Coast.
- Penguin to Wynyard: A practical coastal base for towns, food stops, Table Cape and inland waterfalls.
- Stanley and Smithton: Best placed for Circular Head, with a long return to Devonport or Cradle Mountain.
- Cradle Mountain area: Useful for early park access, but bookings, seasonal conditions and supplies need advance planning.
- West coast: Strahan, Queenstown and nearby settlements belong to a separate leg with slower road connections.
Where to begin
Accommodation includes hotels, motels, apartments, cabins, hosted stays, holiday parks and regulated camping. Compare cancellation terms, heating, parking, kitchen facilities, accessibility and late check-in. A remote view is not useful if it adds hours to every planned activity.
Check before you commit
Book through the property or a reputable platform and keep the address and check-in instructions offline. Confirm whether reception is staffed after a late ferry, whether an electric vehicle charger must be reserved and whether roads are suitable in forecast conditions.
Fit it into the trip
Use at least two bases for an itinerary that combines Devonport, Stanley and Cradle Mountain. Avoid checking out every morning when two nights in one town can cover several nearby places with less packing and driving.
