Bridgewater sits on the northern shore of the River Derwent opposite Granton. The crossing has shaped the suburb for nearly two centuries, from a convict-built causeway to successive road and rail bridges.
A new crossing opened in 2025
The new four-lane Bridgewater Bridge opened to traffic on 1 June 2025. It includes an upstream shared path for pedestrians and cyclists and connects the Brooker, Midland and Lyell highway approaches.
The 1946 lift-span bridge was subsequently dismantled, while the heritage-listed causeway remains. Interpretive work and retained elements record the earlier crossings.
Visiting the foreshore
Use formed parking and the current Nielsen Esplanade facilities. The boat ramp and jetty reopened in late 2025, but river users should check Marine and Safety Tasmania notices before travelling upstream.
Do not stop on highway shoulders to photograph the bridge. The shared path is a transport link, so keep left, control children and expect bicycles. Granton provides the southern history of the crossing, while New Norfolk lies upriver.
