Ben Lomond National Park protects a high dolerite plateau south-east of Launceston. Snow sports draw winter visitors, while exposed walks, cliffs and alpine plants define warmer months.
Jacobs Ladder is serious driving
The final unsealed climb is steep, narrow and winding. Uphill vehicles give way to descending traffic, the speed limit is 30 km/h and walking on the road is prohibited.
Winter requirements are mandatory
All vehicles must carry correctly fitting snow chains from June through September. Conditions can close the upper road without notice, and chains are not available on the plateau.
Prepare for alpine conditions
A park pass is required. Carry warm and waterproof layers year-round, use official track information and avoid assuming a clear lowland forecast applies at 1,500 metres.
